The International Year of Family Farms is coming to a close. One example of what family farms can achieve can be seen in this video of Almería, which has a high concentration of family farmers who have built "the garden of Europe" with the help of cooperative finance (Cajamar) and farmers' cooperatives (associated cooperative members of Coexphal).

The "garden" which supplies 35% of Europe's fresh fruit and vegetable has innovated to become increasingly sustainable, through the help of cooperative research and management. For example, its' water footprint is 1/10 of the rest of the country, in spite of the fact that it is nearly a desert. In this video, farmers talk directly about their approach to a sustainable sector and what farming means to them.

The video  is in Spanish with English subtitles. Enjoy the production from the organizers of the International Workshop on Family Farms in Almería, Spain, which was just released last week and is available at this link.
